The Nigeria Police Force in Ogun State has arrested a 30-year-old suspect, Bayegun Nathaniel, in connection with the abduction and murder of a 16-year-old girl, Adegbaaju Florence, in Ogiijo community.
The suspect was apprehended following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
Confirming the arrest in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the victim was abducted on April 8, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. in Ogiijo.
He said the command immediately activated its anti-kidnapping response mechanism and launched a coordinated investigation upon receiving the report.
“Through sustained intelligence gathering and strategic operations, detectives on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., successfully arrested the suspect in connection with the case,” Babaseyi said.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect confessed to carrying out the crime alone and admitted collecting a ransom of N500,000 before allegedly killing the teenager and dumping her body in a river within the Ogiijo community.
He added that efforts were ongoing to recover the victim’s remains for forensic examination, while further investigations continue to ensure a thorough and conclusive process.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, condoled with the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible information.
In a related development, the Ogun State Police Command has recovered a single-barrelled long gun and six live cartridges from a fleeing suspect during a stop-and-search operation along the Ayetoro–Olodo Road axis in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on April 23, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., when a patrol team attached to the Aiyetoro Area Command was conducting routine checks along the highway.
Babaseyi said the yet-to-be-identified suspect, who was riding an unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, reportedly spotted the operatives from a distance and immediately fled.
“In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect threw a single-barreled long gun along with six live cartridges into a nearby bush before escaping on the motorcycle,” he said.
The police spokesperson said the exhibits were promptly recovered and secured in the command’s armoury, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspect for investigation and prosecution.
Ojajuni commended the vigilance of the operatives and reiterated the command’s resolve to clamp down on illegal possession of firearms and other criminal activities across the state.
