The Anambra State Police Command has arrested the biological parents of twin babies whose lifeless bodies were discovered in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

The bodies of the infants were found on Sunday morning by passersby, wrapped in a box containing baby clothing. The discovery prompted an immediate report to officers at the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters.

Residents expressed shock and outrage over the incident, describing it as a disturbing act that should not be tolerated. One resident, identified simply as Uche, said the bodies were abandoned in a manner that made them easily visible to members of the public.

She lamented the incident, noting that there are orphanages where unwanted children could be taken rather than being abandoned in such circumstances.

Another eyewitness speculated that the babies may have been abandoned by someone unwilling or unable to take responsibility for raising them.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police operatives swiftly responded after receiving information about the discovery.

According to him, officers secured the scene, gathered evidence, and immediately launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of the infants’ biological parents.

Ikenga said the suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the twins.

He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident, describing it as a disturbing display of inhumanity and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.

The police commissioner commended the operatives for their prompt response and investigative efforts, which led to the arrest of the parents shortly after the case was reported.

Orutugu reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable in connection with the incident would face the full weight of the law, stressing that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live.

The police said investigations are ongoing and assured the public that further developments would be communicated as the case progresses.
