There is something distinctly Nigerian about looking at an extraordinary challenge and saying: let’s try it anyway.

Over the years, Nigerians have pushed the limits in music, sport, food, art, entertainment and popular culture, earning places in the Guinness World Records.

From Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and record-breaking Nigerian athletes to chef Hilda Baci and the latest Nollywood sensation Black Market, Nigerians have repeatedly found unusual ways to make history.

The latest chapter of Nigerians who have broken Guinness world Records came on September 26, 2026, when 51,000 qualifying viewers gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos to watch the Nollywood crime thriller Black Market from beginning to end.

The feat earned the film a Guinness World Records title for the largest audience for a film screening, adding another record to Nigeria’s growing list of global achievements.

But Nigerians and Guinness World Records have a much longer history.

Fela Kuti: The Nigerian Music Legend in Guinness World Records

Long before world-record attempts became major social media events, Nigeria was already producing Guinness World Records holders.

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti holds the Guinness World Records title for the most studio album recordings released by a solo artist, with 46 albums recorded between 1969 and 1992.

The record reflects the extraordinary productivity of one of Africa’s most influential musicians.

Fela’s career helped establish Afrobeat as a globally recognised sound, while his music and activism made him one of Nigeria’s most internationally known cultural figures.

His Guinness World Records achievement is also part of a much broader Nigerian history of record-breaking in music, sport and entertainment.

Nigerian Athletes Who Have Made Guinness World Records History

Nigeria’s record-breaking history extends well beyond music and entertainment.

Nigerian athletes, particularly in para-sport, have also held world records in their respective events.

Among those associated with record-breaking achievements are Lucy Ejike, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Bose Omolayo, Lauritta Onye, Flora Ugwunwa and Goodness Nwachukwu.

Former Super Eagles captain and coach Stephen Keshi also entered the record books after becoming the youngest person to win the Africa Cup of Nations both as a player and as a coach.

These achievements demonstrate the breadth of Nigeria’s presence in international record books, from football and powerlifting to athletics and other sporting disciplines.

Nigeria’s Unusual Guinness World Records: From Wig-Making to Crocheting

In recent years, Nigerians have expanded the idea of what a world record can look like.

Record-breaking attempts have emerged in areas including football freestyle, skipping, hairdressing, mathematics, radio broadcasting, reading, painting, crocheting and wig-making.

Helen Williams, for example, became internationally recognised for producing a record-breaking handmade wig.

Chidinma Modupe Okafor made headlines with a record-breaking crocheting marathon, while Samson Ajao spent 215 hours reading aloud.

Nigerian artist Fola David-Tolaram also attracted international attention after creating the world’s largest drawing by an individual, measuring 1,004.7 square metres.

The variety of these achievements is one of the most striking aspects of Nigeria’s Guinness World Records story.

Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Records Cook-a-Thon

Few Nigerian Guinness World Records attempts have generated as much excitement as Hilda Baci’s 2023 cooking marathon.

In May 2023, Baci cooked continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes, setting the Guinness World Records title for the longest cooking marathon by an individual at the time.

Her attempt in Lagos attracted huge crowds and generated enormous attention online, turning the chef into one of Nigeria’s most recognisable record breakers.

The record has since been surpassed. Guinness World Records currently identifies Liberian-Australian chef Evette Quoibia as the holder, with a time of 140 hours and 11 minutes.

But Baci’s impact went beyond the record itself.

Guinness World Records said it received more than 1,500 new applications from Nigeria within two months of her attempt, highlighting the wave of interest her achievement generated.

Her cook-a-thon effectively helped turn Guinness World Records attempts into a major part of Nigeria’s contemporary popular culture.

Hilda Baci Sets Another Guinness World Record With Jollof Rice

Hilda Baci returned to the Guinness World Records in 2025.

On September 12, 2025, Baci and Gino Nigeria created an enormous 8,780-kilogram serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice in Victoria Island, Lagos. Guinness World Records recognised the achievement as the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.

The record-breaking dish included 4,000 kilograms of basmati rice, 164 kilograms of fresh goat meat and approximately 600 kilograms of Baci’s jollof pepper mix.

More than 16,600 portions were subsequently distributed, according to Guinness World Records.

The achievement gave Nigeria another opportunity to place one of its most popular foods — jollof rice — on the global record-breaking stage.

Hilda Baci Becomes a Guinness World Records ICON

Baci’s record-breaking journey reached another milestone in 2026 when Guinness World Records inducted her as a GWR ICON.

The organisation highlighted her record-breaking career and the influence her achievements have had on the wider record-breaking movement in Nigeria and Africa.

Her story has therefore evolved beyond one cooking marathon.

It now represents how a single Nigerian record attempt can create widespread public interest, inspire other attempts and turn an individual achievement into a larger cultural moment.

Black Market Sets New Guinness World Records Record in Lagos

The latest addition to Nigeria’s Guinness World Records story has come from Nollywood.

On September 26, 2026, thousands of people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos for a public screening of the Nigerian crime thriller Black Market.

Guinness World Records recognised 51,000 qualifying viewers who watched the film from beginning to end.

The figure surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers, reportedly set in 2015 during a screening of Felix Manalo in the Philippines.

Although reports put attendance at the wider Lagos event at around 64,000 people, the official Guinness World Records figure was 51,000 qualifying viewers.

The achievement adds film and Nollywood to the growing list of fields in which Nigerians have pursued and achieved Guinness World Records titles.

Why Do Nigerians Keep Breaking Guinness World Records?

Nigeria’s Guinness World Records story is unusually diverse.

    It includes:

    • Music: Fela Kuti
    • Food: Hilda Baci
    • Art: Fola David-Tolaram
    • Sport: Nigerian athletes across several disciplines
    • Film: Black Market
    • Craft and skills: Wig-making, crocheting, reading and other endurance challenges

The motivation behind individual attempts varies.

For some people, it is about personal achievement. For others, it may involve entertainment, business promotion, cultural representation, national pride or simply the desire to prove that an unusual idea is possible.

Whatever the motivation, successful attempts can put Nigerian individuals, businesses and cultural achievements before a global audience.

From Fela Kuti to Black Market: Nigeria’s Guinness World Records Story

From Fela Kuti’s 46 studio albums to Hilda Baci’s 93-hour cooking marathon, her record-breaking jollof rice achievement and now Black Market’s massive film screening, Nigeria has developed a remarkable history of Guinness World Records achievements.

The records also reveal how Nigerian creativity continues to evolve.

Fela Kuti put Nigeria’s name in the record books through music. Nigerian athletes followed through sporting achievements. Hilda Baci brought renewed attention to record-breaking through food, while Black Market has now extended that tradition into Nollywood.

What started as individual attempts to achieve extraordinary feats has increasingly become part of Nigeria’s popular culture.

And as new Nigerians continue to look for unusual challenges to conquer, one thing remains certain:

There will always be another Nigerian willing to attempt the extraordinary.
