The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly attempting to kidnap his aunt who raised him from childhood.
The suspect was paraded on Saturday by the command’s spokesman, SP Edafe Bright, who disclosed that Destiny allegedly paid N900,000 to individuals he believed were kidnappers to abduct the woman. According to the police, the suspect made an initial payment of N200,000 and later added N700,000 to facilitate the planned abduction.
Bright described the incident as part of a growing trend of violence against benefactors, noting cases where individuals turn against those who once helped them. He said Destiny lived with his aunt for about 10 years, from the age of five to 15, before cutting off contact with the family.
Police investigations revealed that the plot failed after the individuals Destiny approached turned out not to be kidnappers. Instead, they reportedly set him up and handed him over to authorities, thereby preventing the crime.
During interrogation, Destiny admitted to the offence but claimed he could not explain his motive, attributing his actions to “the devil.” He said he is a married father of two and runs a haulage and building materials business, from which he sourced the money used for the failed plot.
The aunt, who identified the suspect as her elder sister’s son, expressed shock and distress over the incident, stating that Destiny had not maintained a relationship with her since leaving her home as a teenager. She insisted that the law should take its course.
Police authorities commended her stance, emphasizing the importance of allowing justice to prevail in such cases. The suspect is currently in custody with the Raiders squad of the Delta State Police Command as investigations continue.
