The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Sufiyanu Aliyu, for allegedly killing his 15-year-old wife, Suwaiba Abubakar, in Tangaza Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Sokoto.
According to Rufai, the tragic incident occurred on October 27 at the suspect’s residence in Gwanyal Village, and was reported to the police by a good Samaritan.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene. The area was visited, processed, and cordoned off for forensic analysis,” Rufai stated.
He said the suspect was arrested at the scene, and a knife believed to have been used in committing the crime was recovered as an exhibit.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had a heated altercation with his wife, which escalated into violence, leading to her death.
“Aliyu allegedly used a knife to inflict fatal injuries on the victim. He has since confessed to the crime during interrogation,” the police spokesman added.
Rufai further said the victim’s body was taken to a hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death.
He noted that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while the suspect has been charged to court for prosecution.
Rufai commended the swift response of officers involved in the case and reaffirmed the Police Commissioner’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring justice.
He also urged members of the public to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
