A Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) student has been taken into custody in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State for allegedly killing his teacher during an altercation over a confiscated school cap.
The incident occurred on Thursday at UBE Secondary School, Oju Centre.
The student, identified as 16-year-old Friday Ogamude, allegedly confronted his teacher, 35-year-old Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, demanding the return of a cap that had been seized in May 2025.
According to eyewitnesses, the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation during which the student reportedly attacked the teacher. Mr. Oyibe collapsed during the incident.
He was immediately rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical professional.
The teacher’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Oju for an autopsy.
Police have confirmed the arrest of the suspect and described the incident as “deeply troubling.”
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation is underway and that appropriate legal action will follow.
