The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests solely with the board.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
The development was disclosed in the board’s weekly bulletin released on Monday.
Aina said JAMB remained the only statutory body authorised to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
He expressed concern that candidates often assumed documents issued by institutions offering them admission were genuine, even when such documents did not meet the board’s requirements.
The registrar urged institutions involved in the practice to desist, stressing that they were also responsible for ensuring that candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to conduct admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
According to him, any admission process carried out outside the approved platform is illegal and invalid.
Aina further stressed that institutions were not permitted to substitute their own admission letters for the official documents issued by JAMB after candidates had accepted their offers through CAPS.
He added that only admissions processed and recognised through the platform were accepted for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), among other official purposes.
