Sweden international Alexander Isak has completed a sensational British-record £125 million ($167 million) transfer to Liverpool, ending a dramatic summer saga that saw the striker force a move away from Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old sealed the switch to Anfield on Premier League transfer deadline day, signing a six-year deal with Arne Slot’s reigning champions.

Isak’s move marks the most expensive transfer involving a British club, surpassing previous record fees and sending shockwaves through the Premier League.

The striker did not participate in Newcastle’s pre-season preparations or feature in their first three league matches this season, as speculation around his future intensified. His absence drew sharp criticism from supporters who had once hailed him as a hero at St James’ Park.

During Newcastle’s goalless draw with Leeds United on Saturday, a section of travelling fans made their feelings known with chants of: “We don’t care about Isak — he doesn’t care about me. All we care about is NUFC.”

Despite the bitter end, Isak took to Instagram shortly after his transfer was confirmed to post a heartfelt farewell to the club and city that embraced him during his three-year stay.

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared,” Isak wrote.

“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey.

    Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite with his electric pace, clinical finishing, and composed presence on the pitch. He scored 54 goals in 86 Premier League appearances, and added to his legacy by finding the net in the League Cup final earlier this year — a historic win that ended Newcastle’s 56-year wait for major silverware.

In a brief statement on Monday, Newcastle confirmed the striker’s departure:

“Newcastle can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”

Isak is expected to make his Liverpool debut after the international break.
