The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured that all suspects connected to the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Delta State will face the full weight of the law, while also disclosing that the identity and address of the sender of the parcel linked to the incident would soon be uncovered.

Speaking in Abuja while parading Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Ayuba, and members of his team allegedly involved in the killing, the IGP confirmed that the officers have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and that their case files have been forwarded for prosecution.

Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the IGP said the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, when the deceased, Mene Ogidi, received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, delivered by a driver.

According to the police, after collecting the parcel, Ogidi proceeded to a motor park to waybill it to Sapele, with the name, address, and phone number of the intended recipient written on it.

The parcel was reportedly searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition, prompting citizens at the scene to effect a citizen’s arrest before contacting the police.

The police said ASP Ayuba and members of his team responded to the scene and took custody of Ogidi. However, instead of following established police rules of engagement and standard operating procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the unarmed suspect after he had already been apprehended.

The IGP disclosed that Ogidi’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary, while a formal autopsy will be conducted by a certified pathologist, with the findings expected to form part of the evidence in the prosecution.

He said the leadership of the force immediately ordered a thorough investigation by the Police Monitoring Unit, which established that the actions of ASP Ayuba and members of his team amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, culminating in the unlawful killing of the victim.

“The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action. Every suspect, regardless of the nature of allegations against them, is entitled to due process under the law,” the IGP stated.

He added that following the conclusion of investigations, ASP Ayuba and three other members of his team were arrested and are currently in custody.

The IGP said internal disciplinary procedures have been concluded against all officers found culpable, adding that they were recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, a recommendation which has been reviewed and ratified by the Police Service Commission.

He confirmed that their dismissal takes immediate effect and disclosed that the case file has been formally forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and prosecution, assuring that the force would fully cooperate to ensure the matter is prosecuted to its logical conclusion in a court of competent jurisdiction.

On other suspects linked to the case, the police said the driver who delivered the parcel from Yenagoa, as well as two members of a vigilante group involved in the incident, remain at large.

The force said tactical teams have been deployed and coordinated investigative measures are ongoing to ensure their arrest and prosecution.

Reassuring Nigerians, particularly the family of the deceased, the IGP said the force does not shield officers who violate the law and vowed that no rank, position, or circumstance would place any officer above accountability.

He also extended condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi and urged members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and trust the process as investigations and prosecution continue.
