A High Court sitting in Maiduguri has sentenced a 33-year-old woman, Salamatu Saidu, to five years’ imprisonment for trafficking two persons through fraudulent means.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons disclosed the development in a case update shared on its Facebook page on Thursday, noting that the conviction was secured on Monday.
According to the agency, Saidu was arraigned, convicted, and sentenced on the same day by Justice Bukar Umar of the Borno State High Court.
NAPTIP stated that the offence contravened Section 26(2) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, which criminalises the fraudulent movement of individuals into or out of Nigeria through deception or unlawful means.
The agency explained that the convict facilitated the illegal movement of two victims, aged 21 and 33, through false representation, an act punishable under the law.
NAPTIP noted that the swift conviction highlights its sustained efforts to curb human trafficking and related crimes across the country.
The agency has recorded several convictions over the years, including 41 traffickers jailed within one year as reported in 2018, and a total of 359 convictions within its first 15 years of operation.
