A devastating nighttime fire at a nursing home in Fall River, Massachusetts, has claimed the lives of nine residents, local officials confirmed on Monday.

The blaze broke out Sunday night at the Gabriel House assisted living facility, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon called the incident “an unspeakable tragedy.”

“Nine people lost their lives in this building last night,” said Bacon.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”

Footage from the scene showed residents being evacuated on stretchers, while firefighters worked urgently to save others.

At least 12 individuals were rescued using ladders, and more than 30 were transported to area hospitals. One person remains in critical condition.

Five firefighters were injured during the rescue operation but have since been released from the hospital.

Crews arrived at the facility shortly before 10:00 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames engulfing the front of the building, with residents still trapped inside.

Approximately 70 people lived at Gabriel House, and about 50 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow, calling it “the most horrific news imaginable.”

In a message posted on X, she said, “I know the people of Fall River are strong and resilient. Now is the time for us to come together to support one another through this terrible tragedy.”
