Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has pledged to serve only one term in office if chosen as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
Amaechi made this commitment during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels TV program hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, on Thursday.
Explaining his decision, the former Rivers State governor said his intention to serve just four years is rooted in maintaining the balance of power between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions. He noted that President Bola Tinubu, a Southerner, would have completed a four-year term by 2027.
“In today’s Nigeria, it’s important to uphold the unwritten agreement that power should alternate – eight years for the south, eight years for the north,” Amaechi said.
Reflecting on his past political stance, Amaechi recalled his opposition to the PDP government’s breach of a similar power-sharing arrangement. “I resisted the PDP then because they broke the four-year transition plan. That could have led to instability. I advocated for a northern candidate to maintain the balance, and now I’ll be among those telling the north that the south must finish its turn.”
When asked if he would stick to just one term in office if elected, Amaechi responded, “Of course.”
“Nigerians know I speak frankly. If I can’t do something, I won’t promise it,” he added, assuring the public of his sincerity.
Amaechi also criticized the current administration under President Tinubu, arguing that it has worsened living conditions for Nigerians and should be voted out.
He was one of the prominent political figures present at the unveiling of ADC as the platform for the proposed political coalition ahead of 2027.
