The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports that it has decided on wards delineation in Warri Southwest, Warri South and Warri North local government areas of Delta State.
The electoral body, on Thursday, said that contrary to reports making the rounds, it was not yet decided on the proposed redrawing of wards in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West, as directed by a Supreme Court ruling on December 2, 2022.
INEC warned against spreading false information and urged people not to disturb the peace in the area.
Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, shared this update in a statement from Abuja.
He explained that after the Supreme Court’s decision, INEC began wide consultations from February 2023 to July 2024. These included meetings with key stakeholders and field visits to all communities in the three local government areas. This process led to the creation of a draft report.
Last Friday, INEC met again with stakeholders in Warri and shared copies of the draft report with all parties involved. This gave everyone a chance to raise any concerns they had.
Mr. Olumekun said the goal is to reach a peaceful agreement that all parties can support.
He added, “Despite the rumors, INEC has not yet made a final decision on the ward delineation in the Warri Federal Constituency. We encourage all stakeholders to submit their feedback on the draft report, which will help guide further discussions.”
He also urged everyone in the area to avoid any actions that might cause unrest and assured that INEC will continue to act fairly, follow the law, and keep consulting with all involved.
