A man identified as Livingston Nwakanma has been arrested by youths of Osaa Ukwu community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State for allegedly killing his mother, Nwaigbe Nwakanma, with a machete.
Nwakanma was reportedly apprehended by community youths after fleeing the scene of the incident on Saturday.
The deceased, popularly known as Daa Nwaigbe, was said to be a well-known trader in the community’s local market.
According to reports, the woman was in her kitchen preparing to make soup when her son allegedly entered the room and attacked her with a machete.
She reportedly sustained severe injuries and died in the attack, leaving residents shocked and throwing the community into mourning.
The suspect was said to have been battling mental health problems for several years, with reports also alleging that he was a drug user.
The victim’s husband, Dede Nwakanma, confirmed the incident, describing the killing of his wife as devastating.
The distraught husband reportedly said his son had exhibited signs of mental instability for about four years before the incident.
He lamented the loss of his wife, describing her as his life partner and expressing grief over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The incident has reportedly sparked anger among residents, while the suspect remains in custody following his arrest by community youths.
The Abia State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the incident or provide details of the investigation as of the time of filing this report.
