Nigerian Afrobeats star, Davido, used the international platform of the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert to draw global attention to the worsening security situation in Nigeria, particularly the plight of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State.

The award-winning singer took to the stage wearing a customised black leather jacket decorated with green buttons bearing the names of pupils and teachers kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State in May 2026. The attacks, which targeted schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities, resulted in the abduction of several students and teachers and sparked widespread concern across the country.

The incident became even more tragic after reports confirmed the death of a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun. Public outrage intensified following the circulation of a disturbing video allegedly showing the educator being killed by his captors.

The attacks triggered protests by residents, students, and education stakeholders, with demonstrators blocking major roads and demanding stronger security measures for schools and rural communities.

Using his performance as a platform for advocacy, Davido called for urgent action to secure the release of those still being held captive. Emblazoned across the back of his jacket was the message, “BRING THEM HOME,” a direct appeal for the rescue of the victims.

Speaking backstage before taking the stage, the singer expressed sadness over the incident and urged federal and state authorities to intensify efforts aimed at ensuring the safe return of the abducted students and teachers.

Davido has long been recognised for combining his music career with humanitarian and social advocacy efforts. Since rising to prominence with hit songs such as Dami Duro, he has consistently leveraged his influence to support charitable causes and raise awareness about pressing societal issues.

In 2022, he launched the Davido Adeleke Foundation to provide support for orphanages and vulnerable individuals. He has also made several donations to humanitarian causes and frequently uses his social media platforms to draw attention to issues affecting Nigerians.

As one of Africa’s most influential entertainers and cultural ambassadors, Davido’s decision to highlight the plight of the Oyo school victims at a major global event resonated with audiences worldwide and renewed calls for decisive action to address insecurity and protect schools across the country.
