Suspected armed bandits have abducted retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife in Katsina State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday along the Katsina–Matazu road while the retired senior military officer and his wife were travelling.

According to sources, armed men intercepted their vehicle in Matazu Local Government Area and forcefully took the couple to an undisclosed location.

The driver conveying the victims was said to have escaped the attack despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the incident.

Major General Abubakar, who previously served as Director of Defence Information, played a prominent role in managing military communications and public information for the Nigerian Armed Forces during his years of service.

The abduction has heightened concerns over the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North-West region, particularly in Katsina State, where incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks have continued to threaten residents and travellers.

The latest attack underscores the ongoing insecurity in parts of the country despite sustained military operations aimed at curbing the activities of armed criminal groups.

Efforts to obtain an official reaction from military authorities were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
