The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alert over the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna State.

The agency disclosed this in a public notice following a complaint received by its Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate, which prompted an investigation into the reported sale of the products.

According to NAFDAC, officials inspected a retail outlet where the items were allegedly being sold and discovered two suspected counterfeit products branded as Coglaet ActivGel 100g and Coglaet Herbal 100g.

The shop owner reportedly told investigators that the products were sourced from a door-to-door sales representative but could not provide proof of purchase.

NAFDAC stated that the counterfeit products have since been removed from circulation at the identified outlet, warning that they failed to meet regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance and may pose health risks to consumers.

The agency identified the products as Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g and Coglaet ActivGel 100g. Both items reportedly list Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, China, as the manufacturer but do not carry batch numbers or NAFDAC registration numbers. They were said to have manufacturing dates of August 2025 and expiry dates of August 2029.

NAFDAC advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of products before purchase or sale. It also urged the public to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its official communication channels.

Healthcare professionals and patients were further encouraged to report any adverse reactions linked to the use of such products as the agency intensifies efforts to combat the spread of counterfeit goods.

The warning comes amid a series of recent enforcement actions by the agency, including alerts on revalidated infant formula and falsified pharmaceutical products, as well as major seizures and destruction of counterfeit and expired medicines across the country.
