A 25-year-old student of the Federal University of Education Kontagora Niger State, Seyi Simon, has been killed after he was allegedly stabbed during a dispute with a fellow student at a campus event.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday during a celebration for newly admitted students tagged “The Freshers’ Fair,” held at the institution’s hall.
It was gathered that Simon was allegedly stabbed by an 18-year-old student, Jafar Musa, following an altercation that broke out around 1:40 a.m.
Confirming the development, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the case was reported at the A Division in Kontagora.
According to him, the disagreement between the two students escalated into violence during the party.
“In the course of the fight, Musa stabbed the student with a dagger. The victim was rushed to General Hospital, Kontagora, where he was confirmed dead, while the suspect was arrested for further investigation,” he said.
The police spokesperson added that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The killing has since triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing concern over rising violence in Nigerian universities and calling for improved campus security.
Some commentators described the incident as a disturbing reflection of insecurity within academic environments, stressing the need for stronger preventive measures, better student monitoring, and enhanced law enforcement presence to avert similar tragedies.
