President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special fund to support members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly those injured in active service and the families of fallen heroes.
The President made the declaration on the occasion of his 74th birthday, where he paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of military personnel across the country.
According to him, he has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a dedicated account for the initiative, which will provide direct support to wounded soldiers, as well as widows, widowers, and children of personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Tinubu also pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the scheme, noting that the initiative would complement existing insurance and welfare arrangements for members of the armed forces.
He called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund, adding that details of the account would be made public soon.
The President emphasised the need for the nation to honour and support those who risk their lives to ensure peace and security, stressing that the initiative is not an act of charity but a collective responsibility.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families,” he stated.
