Vince Zampella, the renowned video game developer and co-creator of the globally successful Call of Duty franchise, has died following a car crash in California. He was 55.

Electronic Arts (EA) confirmed Zampella’s death on Monday. According to local broadcaster NBC4, the veteran game developer died on Sunday while driving his Ferrari along a scenic mountain road north of Los Angeles.

In a statement, the California Highway Patrol said the vehicle veered off the roadway for reasons yet unknown, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed in flames. The agency added that both the driver and a passenger who was ejected from the vehicle died from their injuries. Authorities have not officially identified the victims, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Videos shared by witnesses on social media showed the mangled cherry-red Ferrari burning on the roadside shortly after the crash.

Zampella was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern video gaming. His studios were behind some of the world’s best-selling titles, and he was celebrated for helping define the first-person military shooter genre.

This year, after Battlefield 6 recorded the highest sales in the franchise’s history, Zampella reflected on his career with humility, saying moments of success were never taken for granted despite decades in the industry. The Battlefield series has attracted more than 100 million players over the past two decades, while Call of Duty continues to boast over 100 million active monthly players.

“You have that dream of the game being popular, but I don’t think you’re ever ready for that level of success,” Zampella told gaming site IGN in a 2016 interview.

Zampella began his career in the 1990s as a designer on shooter games before co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002. The studio launched Call of Duty the following year and was later acquired by Activision. After leaving the company under contentious circumstances, he founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010, which went on to develop Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. EA acquired Respawn in 2017.

At EA, Zampella later took charge of efforts to revitalise the Battlefield franchise, further cementing his reputation as a creative force in the industry.

“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work,” EA said in a statement, describing his influence as “profound and far-reaching.”

Respawn Entertainment also paid tribute, praising Zampella for trusting his teams, encouraging bold ideas, and championing both developers and players.

Washington Post video game reporter Gene Park described Zampella’s work as impactful and emotionally resonant, noting that he had a rare ability to craft stories and experiences that captured terror, heroism, and the broader human experience.

Zampella’s death marks the loss of a pioneering figure whose work helped shape modern interactive entertainment.
