Residents of Malabo in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State have raised concerns over the outbreak of a strange illness causing severe pain, flesh decay, and bone damage.
Victims say the disease begins as a painful boil, which later bursts and gradually eats away at the skin and tissues.
Mrs. Phibi Sabo, one of the affected residents, said she has been battling the condition for weeks.
“It started like a boil with pain, then swelled and burst. It began eating into my leg, damaging the bones. Despite receiving medication, I’m still in pain and have an open wound,” she said.
She appealed to the government for urgent support, noting that many affected people can no longer work or support their families.
“We need help before this spreads to the entire community,” she added.
Another victim, Malam Junaidu Adamu, said his symptoms began after returning from the farm.
“It started like a boil on my leg and worsened quickly. My flesh began to decay. I spend ₦25,000 weekly on treatment, but there’s no improvement. My wife now stays home to care for me, and our livelihood has suffered,” he said.
The District Head of Malabo, Alhaji Aliyu Hammawa, confirmed that over 30 residents have been affected. Eight are currently receiving treatment at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), while others are being cared for at local clinics.
He thanked the state government for its response and urged a quick investigation.
Dr. Suleiman Bashir, Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, confirmed that 28 people had been identified with the condition. However, only eight accepted medical treatment.
“The government has paid for treatment at MAUTH, and we’ve collected samples for histology tests. Results are expected in 10 days,” Bashir said.
He advised residents to report unusual symptoms promptly and to seek medical care instead of traditional remedies.
