Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to ensure that the recently announced increase in national revenue leads to real, measurable improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier revealed that Nigeria’s annual revenue target for the year was achieved by August — a development he described as a sign of economic stability.
Reacting in a statement via his Facebook page, Obi congratulated the President but emphasized that economic progress must be felt by the people.
“If the economy is indeed stabilising, as declared, then Nigerians must feel it in their daily lives,” Obi said.
“Borrowing must stop, outstanding payments to contractors should be cleared, and critical, underfunded projects must now receive adequate support.”
He expressed concern over the state of public services, noting that real economic stability cannot be measured by statistics alone.
“True stability is not in figures announced at press conferences, but in functioning classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and hospitals where citizens can access quality care,” he said.
Obi urged the government to channel the surplus revenue transparently into priority sectors such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, especially within the final four months of the year.
“This must be done transparently, with verifiable and measurable outcomes. Anything less would mean the touted revenue growth has failed to translate into real national development,” he said, reaffirming his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
