A mounting public dispute between Gbenga Samuel-Wemimo (GSW) and Apple Store Lekki has captured national attention, drawing focus to broader concerns surrounding consumer protection, corporate accountability and trust in local businesses.

Allegations and Viral Post

The controversy began when GSW published a viral post recounting his experience with the Apple Store located at Jakande, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. He claimed that an iPhone purchased for his wife in September 2023 was later flagged as “stolen” and subsequently “missing” when they attempted to trade it in at an Apple Store in London.

GSW insisted that receipts were intact and used the experience to criticise Nigerian businesses for compromising integrity for profit. He argued that such practices weaken consumer trust and force Nigerians to prefer shopping abroad.

Apple Store’s Rebuttal, Legal Response

Apple Store Lekki issued a rebuttal through its verified channel, alleging that GSW refused to provide the IMEI or receipts that could aid verification. The company stated that its sales records showed no iPhone purchase linked to his wife.

The dispute escalated when Apple Store Lekki engaged OSDOM Solicitors, serving GSW with a demand letter that required him to:

Remove the allegedly defamatory post

Issue a public apology

Refrain from mentioning the store or its staff in future

The letter warned that failure to comply would lead to a lawsuit.

The store also claimed it had contacted GSW’s wife, who allegedly denied involvement in the matter, while accusing GSW of chasing clout and attempting to damage their reputation.

GSW’s Counter

GSW responded publicly, declaring that lawyers were already handling the matter. He rejected the claim that he had presented anyone as his wife and questioned how the store reached that conclusion.

He further accused Apple Store Lekki of misconduct, including:

Publishing the phone number of someone unrelated to him

Wrongly accusing him of defamation

Engaging in cyber bullying and personal attacks

Distracting from the central issue of consumer trust

GSW emphasized his professional background in Public Relations and Crisis Management, stating that his words were chosen carefully. He maintained that he never published the store’s address, staff numbers, or identifiers, unlike what he described as the store’s own acts of cyberstalking.

Clarification from Bukola Coker

The matter took another turn when Bukola Coker, GSW’s estranged wife, issued a WhatsApp clarification. She stated:

“Please I am not the wife referred to in Mr. Samuel-Wemimo’s post. We have been separated since March 2023. So this information is not for me. I am Bukola Coker, not Samuel-Wemimo anymore.”

This revelation cast fresh doubt on the store’s assertion that they had contacted “his wife,” raising questions about whether her identity was misrepresented.

Broader Implications

The dispute has generated widespread debate, reflecting deeper systemic concerns in Nigeria’s business environment:

Consumer protection: Nigerians are demanding stronger safeguards to ensure their purchases are authentic and globally recognised.

Corporate accountability: Businesses face pressure to uphold integrity, accuracy, and transparency in dispute resolution.

Trust erosion: Episodes like this fuel public preference for shopping abroad and amplify concerns about local enterprise credibility.

What Lies Ahead

The case remains unresolved. It is uncertain whether GSW will provide verifiable receipts and IMEI details to substantiate his claims or whether Apple Store Lekki will proceed with its legal threat.

What is clear is that both parties face reputational risks as the public watches closely. The Nigerian business ecosystem cannot afford repeated controversies of this scale. Integrity, transparency and accountability must guide interactions between corporations and customers.
