Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday appeared before the presidential screening panel of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, currently the sole aspirant for the party’s presidential ticket, arrived at the party headquarters alongside Senator Victor Umeh and submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms through an aide.
His appearance before the screening panel further fuelled speculations of a possible consensus arrangement within the party after the NDC suspended the sale of presidential nomination forms shortly after Obi obtained his form.
However, both Obi’s camp and the party leadership have denied the existence of any consensus agreement.
The party had constituted a 17-member screening committee headed by former governor Sam Egwu, with Reuben Egwuaba serving as secretary.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the NDC, Moses Cleopas, has warned party members to brace for what he described as a fierce political contest ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Yenagoa while receiving defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former governorship aspirant Reuben Okoya, Cleopas described the NDC as a “Noah’s Ark” for Nigerians seeking good governance.
“Political power is not given but contested. Until they see the power element in you, they won’t give it to you,” he said.
Cleopas also stated that former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, had invested significant political capital in the party and expressed confidence in the NDC’s chances ahead of the next election cycle.
