The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will release the results of 379,000 candidates who took part in the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this Wednesday.
JAMB spokesperson Dr. Fabian Benjamin confirmed the new release date for the rescheduled results, telling news media outlets, “The results of the candidates who took the rescheduled exam will be released on Wednesday.”
The affected candidates sat for the exam between Friday and Monday, following technical and human errors that marred the original UTME exercise in parts of the country, especially in Lagos and the South-East.
JAMB was forced to act after mass failure in the initial UTME sparked outrage from students, parents, and education stakeholders. Over 1.5 million out of 1.9 million candidates scored below 200 in the exam graded over 400 marks.
An internal probe revealed serious lapses in the testing system. JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, publicly accepted responsibility and became emotional during a press briefing where he announced a makeup exam for affected students.
“This situation was beyond unfortunate,” Oloyede said, describing the glitches as deliberate acts of sabotage.
A total of 379,997 candidates were impacted: 206,610 candidates in 65 centres across Lagos and 173,387 candidates in 92 centres across the South-East
JAMB began sending SMS notifications for the rescheduled exam last Thursday.
Out of the 1,955,069 results already processed, only 4,756 candidates (0.24%) scored 320 and above, another 7,658 (0.39%) scored between 300 and 319, making candidates scoring 300+: 12,414 (0.63%)
Other score brackets: 250–299: 73,441 (3.76%); 200–249: 334,560 (17.11%); 160–199: 983,187 (50.29%); 140–159: 488,197 (24.97%); 120–139: 57,419 (2.94%); 100–119: 3,820 (0.20%) and Below 100: 2,031 (0.10%)
More than 75% of candidates scored below 200, raising tough questions about the credibility of the UTME process and the state of secondary education in Nigeria.
