Gunmen on Monday invaded Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, killing two people in a midnight attack that left residents fleeing for safety.

The attackers, whose motive remains unclear, reportedly stormed the community around 1 a.m., breaking into homes in what residents described as a commando-style operation while searching for specific targets.

A resident, Monica, whose husband was among those killed, alleged that the assailants came from a neighbouring community in another local government area bordering Rumuodogo 2.

She said the gunmen forced their way into their home, dragged her and her husband outside, assaulted him and later shot him dead.

“They came around 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. They started beating my husband before shooting him. They wanted to kill me too, but one of them told the others to spare me because I am a woman,” she said.

Monica further alleged that the attackers claimed they were retaliating over the discovery of bodies in a river in the area last week, accusing members of her community of being responsible.

The attack threw the community into panic, with many residents reportedly fleeing into nearby bushes for safety.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident, saying two people were killed.

“I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to arrest the perpetrators,” Agabe said.

Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
