The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has clarified the official appellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following recurring errors in the way some organisations and media outlets address the Nigerian leader.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by Mr Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Odunuga said the clarification was personally signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who urged the public and media organisations to always verify official titles before publication in order to avoid what he described as embarrassing and avoidable errors.
According to the statement, the correct and official appellation of the President is: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Odunuga said the clarification became necessary following an error observed in the naming and appellation of the President in a publication by a national daily on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
He explained that Akume noted that such lapses could be prevented through proper verification from appropriate official sources.
The SGF’s office also advised media organisations and members of the public to verify official information through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s communication channels before publication.
