Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. The former leader reportedly died at a private clinic in London, where he had been receiving medical care.

The news of his death was confirmed by his former media aide, Bashir Ahmad, in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Ahmad wrote: “The family of the former president has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Al-Jannah al-Firdaus. Amin.”

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari had a long and distinguished career in public service. He first came to national prominence as a military ruler, serving as Head of State from December 1983 until his ousting in August 1985. Decades later, he returned to power through democratic means, winning the presidential election in 2015 and securing a second term in 2019. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president until May 29, 2023.

Buhari’s death marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics, as he remained one of the country’s most influential and polarizing figures for over four decades.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family. In line with Islamic tradition, burial rites are anticipated to be conducted promptly.

Messages of condolence have begun pouring in from political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens across the globe, reflecting on his legacy and contributions to Nigeria.
