Governor Otu Bassey of Cross River State has urged all local government chairmen to maintain strong cooperation with their legislative councils and community stakeholders.

He emphasised that unity and teamwork between the executive and legislative arms are essential to delivering good governance and improving service to the people.

The governor spoke during the swearing-in ceremony of Egbung Odama Egbung as the Acting Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area.

This appointment came after the impeachment of the former chairman, Ms. Theresa Ushie, who was suspended by the Cross River State House of Assembly following petitions from councilors and the ruling party, APC.

Governor Otu highlighted his administration’s commitment to a “people-first” approach. He said that putting the welfare of the citizens first is the core of his leadership and that any conflict between local government executives and legislators could slow down progress.

“We are fully committed to serving the people. The only card we play is the people’s card. So, chairmen must work hand in hand with their councils, elders, youth groups, and all stakeholders.

“We are happy with the efforts of many local government leaders, but we will not tolerate anyone who fails the people under my watch,” Governor Otu added.

The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Owan Enoh, also spoke at the event. He described the appointment of Mr. Egbung as an opportunity to bring new energy and development to Bekwarra Local Government Area.

In his acceptance speech, Acting Chairman Egbung thanked Governor Otu for the trust placed in him. He promised to lead with dedication, inclusiveness, and urgency.

“This is a call to serve, and by God’s grace, I will not let the people down,” he said. He also shared plans to immediately meet with community elders, youth leaders, and market women to unite the local people and begin developmental projects quickly.

The transition in Bekwarra’s leadership follows a period of political tension. Ms. Theresa Ushie, the former chairman, was impeached by local government councillors due to disagreements and complaints. The State House of Assembly stepped in, suspending her for 90 days and instructing that the vice chairman take over as acting chairman.

Governor Otu call for harmony between local government executives and legislatures as it reflects his administration’s broader goal of peaceful, effective governance across Cross River State. He stressed that good cooperation is the key to ensuring the timely delivery of services and community development.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a new chapter for Bekwarra Local Government Area, with hopes high that the new leadership will drive positive change and unity.
