President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under intense public scrutiny following reports that he was recently spotted wearing a luxury wristwatch reportedly worth over $61,000. The watch, identified as a Patek Philippe timepiece, has ignited widespread debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the optics of such extravagance amidst the country’s ongoing economic struggles.

Photos of the president wearing the high-end accessory circulated widely on social media platforms, sparking criticism from citizens who view the display of wealth as tone-deaf. Nigeria is currently grappling with high inflation, rising unemployment, and fuel subsidy reforms that have significantly increased the cost of living.

“This is not the time for such ostentatious displays,” said Aisha Bello, a civil society advocate based in Lagos. “The average Nigerian is struggling to afford necessities, and seeing our leader with a watch worth tens of millions of naira is both disappointing and enraging.”

The Patek Philippe brand is known for its exclusivity and luxury, with some models costing as much as high-end cars or homes. The particular model Tinubu was seen wearing is estimated to be worth approximately ₦95 million, depending on market rates and configuration.

Neither the Presidency nor Tinubu’s media team has issued an official response to the controversy. However, some supporters have defended the president, arguing that personal gifts or previously acquired assets should not overshadow his current leadership.

Still, critics insist that in a time of national austerity, public officials must be sensitive to perceptions of wealth and privilege. The debate has further fueled discussions about transparency, accountability, and the lifestyles of Nigeria’s political elite.

As the conversation continues to trend across media platforms, analysts suggest that the incident could further erode public trust — unless addressed swiftly and transparently by the presidency.
