President Bola Tinubu is set to confer National Honours on a number of selected lawmakers on June 12, as part of the activities marking this year’s Democracy Day.
This announcement was made in a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., on Sunday in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), members and leaders of the House of Representatives will take part in a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly scheduled for Thursday, June 12.
President Tinubu, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, is expected to address the joint sitting of lawmakers during the event.
“The programme will also include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, as well as the conferment of National Honours on selected legislators by Mr. President,” Rep. Rotimi stated.
He revealed that the theme for this year’s Democracy Day is:
“26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rep. Rotimi described the Joint Sitting as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history, highlighting the National Assembly’s essential role in upholding democratic principles, promoting accountability, and driving national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.
He called on Nigerians to observe Democracy Day as a moment for reflection, renewed patriotism, and a collective commitment to building a more inclusive, united, and prosperous country.
