The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to question former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo—popularly known as Tompolo—over an alleged incident involving the abuse of the Nigerian naira.
In a post shared Monday on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the EFCC stressed that “Nobody is above the law,” stating firmly, “Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
The post included an image allegedly showing the improper handling of currency.
This development follows public outcry over a viral video posted on Sunday by X user Harrison A (@harreceipts). The footage, believed to be from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April, shows him dancing while being sprayed with N1,000 notes by an associate.
Social media users were quick to criticize the act, calling on the EFCC to take action and accusing the agency of selective enforcement of its regulations.
One X user, Ugochukwu_96, commented: “EFCC no dey see these kind people them. He dey invisible.”
This is not the EFCC’s first crackdown on high-profile figures over similar misconduct. Lately, Lagos socialite Emeka Okonkwo (a.k.a. E-Money) was apprehended for allegedly ruining naira notes and spraying US dollars.
Last week, the commission also summoned Nollywood star Iyabo Ojo and comedian Ayo Makun for questioning related to alleged currency-spraying incidents.
