… Says party is focused on resolving its internal crisis

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed speculations about joining a coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP’s National Secretary—recently reaffirmed by the Supreme Court as the party’s legitimate scribe—has emphasized that internal disputes within the party are being addressed.
In an interview with The Punch, Anyanwu called on party members to focus on rebuilding and strengthening the PDP rather than engaging in coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections. He urged members to prioritize unity and consolidation from within.
His remarks come in response to last week’s announcement of an opposition coalition featuring key 2023 presidential candidates, including Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The coalition aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
Anyanwu stated he was unaware of any such coalition and reassured PDP members of the party’s resilience despite past challenges. He acknowledged the instability caused by internal divisions but expressed confidence in the party’s ability to move forward stronger.
Dismissing claims that the PDP is considering alliances, Anyanwu urged those advocating for mergers to join the party instead.
“The PDP is not part of any coalition and has not been invited to any coalition meetings. The party remains strong at the grassroots, ward, and state levels. The crisis is over, and people should join the PDP rather than expect it to merge with any coalition,” he asserted.
