The report of alleged discovery of seven mutilated female bodies on Wednesday evening, which caused panic along Iwofe Road, Rumuelumeni area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been found to be untrue.
Our checks revealed that the cause of the putrid smell around the area is poultry remains dumped by unscrupulous waste collectors and not human bodies.
The Rivers State Waste Management Authority, RIWAMA, which confirmed this latest development, said the waste has been evacuated, adding that the decontamination of the environment has also been done.
Reports had been rife that the remains of the suspected seven female victims of ritual killers or organ harvesters were found tied in sacks at a dump on OPM Street Junction, off Iwofe Road.
Residents of the area said they were attracted by the growing putrid odour from the waste dump and were forced to call health officials to investigate the source of the malodorous air around the neighbourhood.
“It was during the investigation that they discovered the bodies of the victims, with many parts and organs missing,” one source in the area had told our reporter.
However, fresh information gathered on the matter showed that it was chicken and other poultry wastes.
The Rivers State Police Command is yet to release its findings, but Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the report of seven mutilated bodies was ‘not true’.
She said the police would issue a statement on the matter shortly.
