The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a nine-year-old boy for allegedly setting his family’s house ablaze, resulting in the death of his two stepmothers and two younger brothers in Rugan Badali, Karasuwa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred after the boy was accused of stealing a fowl and was beaten by his father.
The minor reportedly confessed to setting the house on fire as an act of revenge against his father.
According to the suspect, he took one of the family’s fowls to sell but was reported to his father by members of the community.
He said his father subsequently beat him over the incident, prompting him to plan the arson.
The boy reportedly bought matches worth ₦50 from a nearby shop the following day and waited until his two stepmothers and two younger brothers were asleep before setting the house ablaze.
He said he raised an alarm after the fire started, prompting neighbours to rush to the scene in an attempt to rescue those inside.
However, the minor admitted that he did not initially reveal his involvement in the incident.
He reportedly confessed three days later after prayers, following which the police arrested him and took him to Damaturu.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe State, ASP Yusuf Adamu-Ali, said the suspect was a minor but would not simply be allowed to go free.
Adamu-Ali said appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law, adding that the case should serve as a deterrent to other children who may engage in unlawful acts.
The incident has raised concerns over the need for closer supervision of children and early intervention when minors display behaviour that could endanger themselves or others.
