    UPDATES

Turnout is going to be affected by the early morning downpour in Oredo (Edo State) and capital Benin City.

Voting has commenced in many areas including Esan West, with reports indicating peace and orderliness.

The main contenders in the Edo State gubernatorial election are:

All Progressive Congress, APC; People Democratic Party, PDP; and Labour Party are the front runners in what seems to be a repeat of last year’s presidential election.

    1. Asue Ighodalo (PDP):
      • Strengths:
        • Well-known for his legal and business acumen.
        • Strong connections within the business community.
        • Emphasizes economic development and job creation.
      • Weaknesses:
        • Limited political experience.
        • May face challenges in grassroots mobilization.
    2. Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC):
      • Strengths:
        • Experienced politician with a strong legislative background.
        • Strong party machinery and support.
        • Focuses on infrastructure development and security.
      • Weaknesses:
        • Previous controversies and allegations of corruption.
        • May struggle to appeal to younger voters.
    3. Olumide Akpata (LP):
      • Strengths:
        • Popular among young professionals and the youth.
        • Known for his leadership in the Nigerian Bar Association.
        • Advocates for judicial reforms and good governance.
      • Weaknesses:
        • Relatively new to the political scene.
        • Limited reach in rural areas.

Ikpoba Okha Ward 6, Units Ivwioto Pry School

One of the early voters, Victor Uwagor, said the process was seamless and peaceful. “I voted around 8 am and left immediately because of the rain. But the exercise, at the time, was very peaceful.”

    Vote Buying in Egor

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission officials arrested three persons for alleged vote-buying in Egor LGA. Two male and female suspects were taken away by the EFCC operatives, despite protest by some persons.

PDP’s Ighodalo Protests arrest of members

He said, “In Uromi Ward 3, about an hour ago, one of our supporters was arrested by men in mufti carrying a gun. Nobody should carry guns to the polling unit, that is against regulation.”

He raised the alarms about oppression and intimidation against his supporters, stating, “We will not be oppressed.”

He spoke shortly after he cast his vote at Okaigben Ward 1, Unit 3, Ewohimi, Esan Southeast LGA.

Meanwhile, there were reports of underage voting in the same ward, with suspected under-18 voters caught on camera.

Gov Obaseki: arrived at his ward 4 Unit 19 Emokpae polling unit to cast his vote about midday.

Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole: expressed satisfaction with the electoral process and hoped it remained peaceful for the day.

Disruption Over Missing Result Sheet: there was a skirmish at Ward 8, Unit 1, Orhionmwon due to the unavailability of result sheets.

Philip Shaibu Yet to Vote: The Deputy Governor is yet to cast his vote due to non-functional BVAS. The court-reinstated Deputy Governor, however, INEC and security agencies for the peaceful process so far across the state.
