The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his son for allegedly being in unlawful possession of four single-barreled guns along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.

The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed.

According to the statement, the suspects, identified as 68-year-old Tibi Friday of Futoro Gbene Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area and his 36-year-old son, Oyabrade Tibi, were apprehended during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by operatives of the Anti-Vice Unit at about 10:30 a.m. on July 6.

The police said the father and son were travelling in a commercial tricycle to Abua in neighbouring Rivers State when officers intercepted the vehicle for a routine search.

During the operation, security operatives reportedly discovered four single-barreled guns concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in what investigators believe was an attempt to evade detection.

Mohammed said the arrest marked another significant operational breakthrough for the command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor.

He added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yenagoa for a comprehensive investigation to determine the source of the firearms and identify any other persons who may be connected to the alleged offence.

The police spokesperson said preliminary investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the recovered weapons.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and tackling violent crimes across Bayelsa State.

Mohammed also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
