Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night foiled another attempted attack by suspected armed assailants, killing one of the attackers during a gun battle.
The attackers reportedly attempted to breach the institute’s security perimeter at about 11 p.m. but were met with stiff resistance from security personnel, who engaged them in a fierce exchange of gunfire and forced them to retreat.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the institute’s Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, NIPSS said the swift and coordinated response of security operatives prevented the assailants from gaining access to the premises.
According to the statement, one of the attackers was neutralised during the encounter, while several others escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
The institute said the gunmen failed to penetrate its security perimeter, assuring that all participants of the Senior Executive Course, staff, residents, and facilities remained safe and unharmed.
It added that security agencies had intensified efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures had been strengthened within and around the institute.
Reassuring participants, staff, their families, and the general public, NIPSS said the safety of lives and property remained its highest priority. The institute also commended the professionalism and prompt response of security agencies and urged the public to disregard misinformation capable of causing unnecessary panic.
The latest attack comes just weeks after another failed attempt by gunmen to gain access to the institute’s premises.
