The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the seizure of 9,058.543 kilograms of illicit drugs and the arrest of 260 suspects by its Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Strategic Command in Ikeja from 2025 to date.

The Commander of the MMIA Strategic Command, Mohammad Ahmad, disclosed the figures on Friday during the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Ahmad said the command also secured the conviction of 101 drug offenders within the same period, describing the achievements as a reflection of the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigeria from drug trafficking and substance abuse through innovative enforcement strategies.

Speaking at the event, themed “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” Ahmad called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, communities and other stakeholders to combat illicit drug trafficking through Nigeria’s busiest international airport.

He noted that the command’s successes were driven by consistent implementation of innovative drug enforcement strategies and urged sustained inter-agency cooperation to build on the gains recorded.

Also speaking, retired Assistant Commander-General of Narcotics, Ibiba Odili, appealed to Nigerians to support anti-drug campaigns, stressing that collective efforts are vital in tackling the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking.

A participant at the event, Chibuzor Osakwe, emphasised the need for continuous public awareness campaigns, particularly among young people, to educate them on the dangers of illicit drug use and encourage responsible lifestyle choices.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and strengthen global efforts against the illicit drug trade.
