The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a young man accused of killing his girlfriend in the Edjeba area of Warri under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed on Thursday that the suspect allegedly told investigators he attacked the woman because he believed she had been unfaithful to him.
The identities of both the suspect and the deceased had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report, with the police saying details were still being obtained from the division handling the case.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, has generated widespread concern and speculation within the Edjeba community.
Residents said the deceased was in a relationship with the suspect, who reportedly lived on Ajidi Street. According to sources, the woman frequently visited the residence and was known to spend long periods there.
Witnesses claimed she was seen a day before the incident buying food items, apparently to prepare a meal for herself and her boyfriend.
Reports indicated that the landlord of the compound was awakened by distressing screams coming from the suspect’s apartment during the night. He reportedly alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and allegedly found the woman’s lifeless body bearing severe injuries to her neck and legs.
The victim’s remains have since been deposited in a mortuary, while the suspect remains in police custody at the B-Division Police Station as investigations continue.
While police authorities said the suspect attributed the attack to alleged infidelity, some residents have circulated claims that the killing may have been linked to ritual-related activities. However, law enforcement authorities have not confirmed those allegations.
Edafe said further details would be released as the investigations progress.
