The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended Chief Mike Ozekhome from using the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) pending the outcome of ongoing disciplinary proceedings and other legal matters involving the senior lawyer.
The decision was taken at the LPPC’s 173rd General Meeting held on June 23, 2026, and was announced in a statement signed by the committee’s Secretary, Kabir Akanbi.
According to the LPPC, the suspension was approved in line with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and all matters relating to the rank.
The committee directed Ozekhome to immediately stop presenting or referring to himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary proceedings before the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee are concluded.
“The suspension is intended to safeguard the integrity, dignity, and prestige of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria while due consideration is given to the matters under review,” the statement said.
The LPPC emphasized that the measure is temporary and will remain in effect pending the final determination of the disciplinary cases and other related proceedings.
Ozekhome is currently facing prosecution alongside Ponfa Useni before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama. The duo is being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) over allegations including forgery of documents, impersonation, and attempts to claim ownership of a London property allegedly linked to the late former FCT Minister, Gen. Jeremiah Useni.
The committee reiterated its commitment to maintaining high ethical standards within the legal profession and ensuring that the SAN rank continues to command public confidence and respect.
