The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the continuation of his trial on alleged cybercrime charges.

Sowore is expected to remain in custody until Wednesday when the court resumes proceedings in a two-count charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS). The charges stem from a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.”

The remand order followed the revocation of the bail earlier granted to the defendant by the court.

Justice Mohammed Umar had, in a ruling delivered on June 16, revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, where he was expected to open his defence.

Sowore had previously chosen to represent himself after his legal team withdrew from the case.

Meanwhile, in a ruling delivered on Monday, Justice Umar dismissed an application seeking his disqualification from the trial over allegations of bias, paving the way for the proceedings to continue.
