The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects for alleged conspiracy, attempted child theft, assault, and possession of suspected hard drugs in Umuahia.

The suspects, identified as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both residents of Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area, were apprehended following an incident involving a two-week-old baby girl and her mother.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the command said the incident occurred on May 25, 2026.

According to the police, Chinagorom allegedly went to the residence of 32-year-old Amarachi Chinyereugo and attempted to forcefully take away her newborn baby. A struggle reportedly ensued between the suspect and the child’s mother, during which he allegedly assaulted and stabbed her with a kitchen knife.

The police said the baby fell and hit her head on the ground during the altercation.

Investigators further revealed that Chibundu remained outside the residence during the incident, allegedly acting as a lookout.

Following a distress call from the victim, the suspects fled the scene but were later arrested at a nearby bus stop. Police said they were found allegedly consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.

The injured mother and her baby were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment and have since recovered.

The command disclosed that exhibits linked to the case were recovered and that investigations conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department had been concluded.

Police said the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on June 2.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Abia State Police Command urged residents to support law enforcement efforts by promptly reporting suspicious activities and security concerns to the nearest police station.
