Mascot Uzor Kalu, younger brother of former Abia State governor and senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
In a withdrawal letter dated May 20, 2026, and addressed to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress through the Abia State Chairman of the party, Mascot Kalu said the decision followed wide consultations with family members, friends, and political stakeholders across the state.
He described the decision as difficult but necessary to promote fairness, equity, and unity within the party in Abia State.
Kalu said one of the key reasons for stepping down was the emergence of his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate, adding that his withdrawal would create room for other aspirants to contest the governorship ticket.
He also maintained that the Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete what he called its “eight years of power rotation,” insisting that the principle of equity must be upheld in the state’s political arrangement.
Despite withdrawing from the race, Kalu reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and urged his supporters and loyalists to remain committed to the party and continue participating actively in its activities ahead of the elections.
