Supporters of Rivers State governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara have moved to contest the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly primary elections in what political observers see as an early strategic move that could shape the governor’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
It was gathered over the weekend that several frontline loyalists of the Rivers State governor obtained nomination and expression of interest forms before the deadline for the party primaries, signaling an emerging political realignment within the state.
Although Governor Fubara has yet to formally declare his intention to seek a second term, sources close to the political camp said he remains interested in re-election, with the outcome of the House of Assembly primaries expected to play a significant role in his political calculations.
Many of those who picked the forms are regarded as key figures in Fubara’s political structure, having played prominent roles during the political crisis that rocked Rivers State. They include former members of the dissolved factional House of Assembly, as well as allies whose elections as local government chairmen were nullified following a Supreme Court judgment that brought an end to the crisis.
Among the notable figures are Chijoke Ihunwo, who was removed by the Supreme Court as Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, and Victor Oko-Jumbo, who led the annulled factional House of Assembly during the political standoff.
Political observers say the development may reignite tensions between Fubara’s camp and the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Confirming his participation, Oko-Jumbo said he had obtained the nomination form to seek a second term as the member representing Bonny Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to equity, fairness, and due process, while also praising Governor Fubara for his guidance, support, and dedication to the interests of ordinary citizens and the unity of Rivers State.
“In my less than three years as a state assembly member, we already have evident legacies of legislative impact, infrastructural delivery, educational support, business grants, and strategic empowerment, all for the good of Bonny people and Rivers State at large,” Oko-Jumbo said.
“As we navigate this season, I remain committed to the ideals of impactful service, accountability, and balanced development, with renewed resolve to stand for Bonny and defend its interests.”
In a separate statement, Ihunwo disclosed that he had picked the APC nomination form to contest for the Obio-Akpor Constituency 1 seat in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He said the decision reflected his continued commitment to public service and his determination to contribute meaningfully to the growth, development, and well-being of his constituency.
“It is a decision inspired by my deep connection with our people, a clear understanding of our collective challenges, and a strong desire to provide purposeful, responsive, and people-oriented representation at the State Assembly,” he said.
Ihunwo also pledged sustained engagement with stakeholders, community leaders, party members, youths, women, and residents of Obio-Akpor.
“Together, we will build a more inclusive, progressive, and prosperous constituency where the voices of the people are heard and their needs adequately addressed,” he said.
He added that growing endorsements and support from individuals and groups had further strengthened his resolve to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication.
“My focus will remain on promoting policies and initiatives that will drive sustainable development, empower our youths, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for all,” he said.
“I humbly seek your continued support, prayers, and cooperation as we move forward together in this journey of service and transformation.”
