The Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has ordered immediate disciplinary action against officers of the Nigeria Police Force involved in the fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State, which led to the death of a civilian, Mene Ogidi.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, the police chief described the incident as “criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable,” stressing that it does not reflect the standards of the Force.

Disu identified the officer at the centre of the incident as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, stating that he acted in gross violation of established procedures and Force Order 247 governing the use of firearms.

“The officer’s action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP said.

He disclosed that all officers involved had been transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja, where they were subjected to internal disciplinary processes. Investigations conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal confirmed breaches of operational procedures and unlawful conduct.

According to the IGP, both panels recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other implicated officers, alongside their prosecution for unlawful homicide. He added that upon dismissal, the officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges.

The recommendations, he said, have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.

Reaffirming the stance of the Force, Disu noted that the actions of the officers were individual breaches and not reflective of institutional values, emphasising that the police operate under the rule of law and maintain zero tolerance for misconduct.

“No uniform is a license to kill,” he stated.

The IGP also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued transparently.

He urged residents of Delta State and Nigerians at large to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, while reiterating the commitment of the Force to accountability and internal reform.

“The era of impunity is over. We are demonstrating that every citizen, regardless of their uniform, is accountable under the law,” he added.
