Residents of Logo Local Government Area have raised concerns over a reported influx of armed Fulani herdsmen into the Gaambe-Tiev axis, warning that the development is heightening tension across affected communities.
Locals said the herders, accompanied by large numbers of cattle, have triggered fear and uncertainty among residents, many of whom rely heavily on farming for their livelihoods. They warned that the situation could escalate if urgent action is not taken.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, described the development as troubling and potentially dangerous, noting that residents are increasingly anxious over their safety.
According to residents, the presence of armed individuals has disrupted normal daily activities, with many farmers reportedly avoiding their farmlands due to security concerns, a situation they fear could affect food production in the area.
A resident and prominent yam farmer, Ukange Abogh, said the development mirrors patterns that previously led to violent clashes in parts of the state. He warned that the Gaambe-Tiev communities, known for their agrarian activities and relative peace in recent times, now face the risk of a breakdown of law and order.
He called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intervene swiftly to prevent the situation from deteriorating and to ensure the protection of lives and property.
Residents also appealed to the government to deploy security personnel to the area, expressing hope that such a move would calm tensions and avert a potential crisis.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
