Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, which previously enabled eligible prepaid customers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.
The company disclosed this in a statement on Friday, with its Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explaining that the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to align operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Despite the suspension, Airtel assured subscribers of uninterrupted access to regular airtime and data purchases through existing channels, noting that the change would not impact overall service quality or network performance nationwide.
Commenting on the development, the Director of Marketing at Airtel Nigeria, Ismail Adeshina, described the move as both necessary and responsible.
He said the company remains committed to maintaining high standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
Airtel added that customers would be informed once there are updates regarding the reinstatement of the suspended services.
The move comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based services in Nigeria’s telecom industry, prompting operators to adjust to new compliance expectations.
