The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, has temporarily relieved commanding officers overseeing affected units along the Lagos-Seme border corridor of their duties following allegations of extortion by personnel.

The action comes in response to viral online reports and videos accusing immigration officers stationed along the busy route of harassing and extorting travellers.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as unacceptable and a violation of the agency’s core values, ethics, and operational standards.

She also ordered an immediate investigation into the incidents, directing that all officers found culpable be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures without delay.

Although the statement did not disclose the number of officers affected or the specific commands involved, it stressed that the move was aimed at restoring accountability and public confidence.

The Lagos-Seme corridor, which connects Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, remains one of the busiest and most strategic border routes in West Africa, handling a high volume of goods, traders, and travellers. It has, however, long been associated with complaints of harassment and extortion by officials.

Allegations of misconduct along the corridor resurfaced recently, drawing widespread public attention and prompting swift action from the immigration authorities.

Nandap, who assumed office in January 2024, has consistently emphasised discipline and accountability as key priorities of her leadership, urging officers to uphold the integrity of the Service.

The Nigeria Immigration Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and efficient service delivery at all entry and exit points, warning that it will not tolerate any act capable of undermining public trust or tarnishing its image.

The Service also encouraged members of the public to report any misconduct through its official communication channels, including its social media platforms and designated contact lines, assuring that all reports would be treated with urgency.
