A tragic incident marred this year’s Good Friday observance in Ugep, as a Mass Communication graduate and church actor, Michael Obeten, lost his life during a Passion of Christ performance.

Obeten, a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church Ugep, was reportedly killed when a locally made firework malfunctioned while he was coaching younger participants in the reenactment.

The incident occurred during the dramatization of the crucifixion, a key moment in the Passion play marking Good Friday. According to eyewitness accounts, a local explosive device known as “oginigbo,” intended to simulate a thunderous effect, misfired and struck Obeten in the head with a metal fragment.

He reportedly collapsed immediately. Initially, some observers believed he was still acting until blood was seen flowing from his head, nose, and mouth, revealing the gravity of the injury.

Obeten, who had portrayed Jesus Christ in previous editions of the play in 2023 and 2024, was this year assisting behind the scenes—helping with microphones, makeup, and coordinating actors—when the fatal accident occurred.

The incident has plunged the church community and residents into mourning throughout the Easter period, casting a shadow over what is traditionally a solemn but symbolic celebration.

Reacting briefly, the parish priest in charge of the church expressed shock over the development, saying, “It has happened. God knows best.”

The tragic loss has sparked grief across the community, with many remembering Obeten for his dedication to the church and his passion for dramatizing the story of Christ.
